Farley Foundation

We believe that every pet deserves access to veterinary care

The Farley Foundation subsidizes the cost of veterinary care for families in Ontario who are struggling financially. Together with veterinary clinics across the province, our funding provides help with vet bills and keeps people and pets together.

How we do it: the veterinary connection

The Farley Foundation was created and is administered by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association. This connection allows us to work with more than 80 percent of veterinary clinics in the province. Much of our success as a pet charity organization is due to the longstanding support of clinic teams and veterinarian champions who have dedicated their lives to pet care.

Learn about our impact

Our vision: Every pet deserves access to veterinary care.

Our mission: We support the relationship between pets and people by generating and allocating resources to subsidize veterinary care for Ontario families in need.

Because the Farley Foundation is administered by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, our overhead costs are very low. This means more of every donor dollar goes toward helping pets and pet owners in need.

Our history: an animal welfare charity since 2002

On Jan. 9, 2002, a cat named Willie had surgery to remove bladder stones at an Ottawa veterinary clinic. Willie’s owner was an Ontario Disability Support Payment recipient, and they became the first to receive funding from Ontario Veterinary Medical Association’s newly formed pet charity organization, the Farley Foundation.

From this humble beginning, the Farley Foundation has grown to fund care for more than 1,500 pets annually, ranging from cats and dogs to horses, chinchillas, birds and reptiles. With more than 20 years of service, we’re one of the most successful pet charities in Canada.

Who is Farley?

Canadian artist and cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s syndicated comic strip, For Better or For Worse®, chronicles the life of the Patterson family. She generously loaned one of her most beloved characters, Farley the English sheepdog, to the foundation as its mascot.  Our name pays homage to Farley, who died in the comic strip while saving April Patterson from drowning when she fell into a river. Farley helps to promote awareness of the foundation, making it possible for thousands of low-income pet owners to continue the relationship with their pets, who mean the world to them.
