Originally starring in Lynn Johnston's internationally syndicated comic strip, For Better or For Worse(R), Farley died after saving the youngest Patterson family member who had fallen into a ravine. Farley's death reverberated around the world with pet owners and followers of the comic strip mourning his death as they would the death of their own pets and family members.
In 2001, Canadian artist and cartoonist Lynn Johnston -- creator of the Farley image -- benevolently loaned Farley's image to the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association when it founded the Farley Foundation.

In March of 2011, Plush Farley made its debut at the joint AAHA/OVMA Veterinary Conference held in Toronto, ON Canada. Although the toy had previously been introduced to veterinarians on paper, it wasn't until they saw him in person at that they fell in love. We brought 40 huggable plush Farleys to the conference, but after only a couple of hours into the trade show, we had to head home to pick up another 200! And they sold out wayyy before the end of the show and boy, were delegates ever disappointed!
