Many dogs and cats don't share our love for fireworks on Canada Day.

The loud explosions can terrify pets. In fact, many animal shelters report increased numbers of lost pets after fireworks displays.

Here's how you can help your pet cope with the excitement of a fireworks display:

Keep your pet inside.
If possible, stay with your pet and offer reassurance.

Muffle the noise.
Close your windows, draw your curtains and turn up the radio or television.

Visit your veterinarian.
In extreme cases, your pet might need to be tranquilized. Discuss this option with your veterinarian.

Prepare for the worst.
Ensure your pet is microchipped and wearing proper identification tags. That way, if your pet does get lost, it will be easier for shelter staff to reunite you after the excitement has died down.
