Does the idea of
"ruffing" it with your pet sound like fun? Camping with a pet can be
a great experience for both of you, if you plan ahead. Here are some
tips for pet owners:
Visit your vet.
Take your pet to the veterinarian to ensure it is in good health and
that all vaccinations are up to date. Your veterinarian is also an excellent
resource for travel tips.
Camping in Canada?
Find out about the park's pet policy. In Ontario, pets are welcome in
provincial parks, provided they are on a leash that is no longer than
2 m (6 ft.). Pets are not permitted in swimming areas or on beaches.
Travelling to
the US?
Pet dogs and cats brought into the US must be free of diseases that
can be transmitted humans. For more information, visit http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/travel/pet.htm.
Call first.
Always phone to find out if pets are welcome before you leave home-even
if you brought your pet to the same campground last year. The rules
may have changed.
Avoid sleepless
nights!
Find out if you need to make special sleeping arrangements for your
pet. Some campgrounds insist that pets sleep in the tent or in a crate.
Stay together.
Never leave your pet unattended, even if it is on a leash.
Don't overdo
it.
If your pet doesn't get lots of exercise at home, don't take it on a
10-mile hike. Remember: your pet is on vacation, too!
Beat the heat.
Ensure that your pet gets plenty of water and access to shade.
Watch for hazards.
Check your pet for signs of dehydration, parasites [like ticks or fleas],
and injuries.
Respect others.
Always clean up after your pet.
Don't get skunked!
Be aware of the possibility of unfriendly encounters with wildlife.
Get a clean
bill of health.
Once you are back home, visit your veterinarian to ensure that your
pet is in good health.
